3 way switch with 4 wires8/23/2023 ![]() I have 1 White, 1 Red, and 2 Blacks (we'll call them B1 & B2). When I pulled the older one out, the wires weren't clamped down very well and 3 of the 4 (yes, 4) wires popped out of place before I had a chance to look and see what was where. The 4 switches go to my fan (1), the light in the fan (2), an overhead desk light (3) and 3 small in-ceiling spot lights (4). 2 I'm trying to replace an older style 3-way switch with a newer one. Each switch has 4 wires coming out of the back. Shown here is a 3-way multi way switching system, commonly referred to as traveler system or traveling pairs. I am not sure what my electrician did when wiring my new office. There is more than one method of wiring multi-way lights. A simple (not smart, not dimmer, not motion, not 3-way, etc.) switch will have a hot and a switched hot.So the white you see is not neutral. NOTE: All switches on the same circuit must be. If you are running 120V to your switches make sure to wire it up to code in junction boxes/enclosures with the wires secure and for low voltage DC systems heatshrink and something like a flange mount enclosure would help limit exposure to electrical terminals behind a panel, cabinet or enclosure. Light switches are functional, and most can look a bit plain. Actually, you very likely do NOT have a black hot and a white neutral. 4-Way installation means you are installing three switches that control one circuit and one set of lights. Run 2-wire cable from the fixture to the first switch. This is the most common light switch found in a home. With a standard or single-pole wall switch, only one switch controls a light or series of lights. This can be utilized in places where switching lights from different locations is useful and don’t have room for household type switches, like the bed of a truck, boat, RV, or for low voltage/wattage LED systems in the home, think bedside lamp from both sides of the bed, similar to a hotel.įor LEDs that are made for constant voltage just put the switches between the DC source and your LED strip/module. To use 2 switches to control the same fixture, you will need to use two 3-way switches. There are several types of light switches that you will encounter when upgrading a switch to a Smart Switch in your home. Multiway switching is a method of using two or more switches to be able to independently control a single load such as a light from separate locations.Īn example of this would be switching a light from the top and bottom of the stairs. A 3-way switch is larger than a single pole switch and has three screw terminals for wiring connections, plus a ground. We are going to get into how you can use any DPDT On-On type toggle, pushbutton or rocker switch and use it as a 4-Way switch for Multiway switching.
